Diet Coke vs. Diet Pepsi

I was a long time, heavy Diet Coke drinker. Although I didn’t drink 12 cans a day like President Trump, I am ashamed to admit I probably drank 6 cans a day. Then I started hearing some alarming news about Diet Coke.

Diet Coke contains Aspartame, one of five artificial sweeteners approved by the FDA. Aspartame has been linked to a higher risk of metabolic syndrome, a group of symptoms including belly fat, and high cholesterol that put you at risk for heart disease.

Surprising to me, aspartame and other artificial sweeteners have been linked to weight gain! There is some research that suggests that aspartame depletes bones of calcium, causing osteoporosis. Yikes! Scary, right?

So I switched to Diet Pepsi. And my new research began. Diet Pepsi contains Sucralose. I thought it was safer, or why would Pepsi have the words “Now Aspartame Free” right on the bottle? Turns out, Sucralose has been linked to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome and obesity.

Evidently, artificial sweeteners do not provide full satisfaction to the brain that sugar does, so some people might eat additional high calorie foods – leading to weight gain.
According to the American Heart Association, the best option is regular sugar in moderation.

I guess I will be drinking a lot of good old water!
